The Geneva Conventions were drawn up because of the use of gas warfare, treatment of captured and wounded soldiers and the indiscriminate killing of civilians during WWI. The United States in the almost 100 years since the convention has yet to fight an enemy that adheres to them. Does that mean the United States should not honor them? No, but neither should any affective means of moving the war to a successful conclusion be summarily dismissed because a group of academics say it doesn't conform to their ideal of ethical behavior. When our soldiers are facing and enemy that believes strapping suicide bombs to mentally disabled women and having them detonate them in public squares is an appropriate way to fight a war, I find the AAA argument of HTS being a violation of human rights and rules of war to be a bit disingenuous.

War by it’s very nature is not ethical. Anyone concerned with this area should read the 2009 (revised) edition of "On Killing" by Col. Dave Grossman. My review is at metapsychology.mentalhelp.netE.
