As a political scientist, the only &quot;politician&quot; Americans I am aware Americans have trusted is George Washington.  The media began supporting candidates and their views.  With the Twentieth Century, the media set goals to be objective.  However, citizens have long learned that Oliver Wendall Holmes was correct in asserting that we must have &quot;a marketplace of ideas&quot; where multiple views can be expressed and broadcast.  Aside from the fact that &quot;the media&quot; in democratic societies indeed fulfill their function of broadcasting a diversity of facts and views, citizens can judge politicians who have been in power on the basis of their power to deliver what the people want. Politicians since 1958 have been aided in determining what their constituencies want through the development of public opinion polling.Judith S.
