Most people consider “news” slanted when it conflicts with the way they want to view the world – it has nothing to do with actual facts. Nor, in general, does the public understand how the profession of journalist works and how news is gathered and disseminated leading to misunderstandings and inaccurate characterizations. Journalism 101 – the general formula, excluding op-ed pieces, is that a variety of “experts” are interviewed in a fair and balanced way for factual information and regarding their viewpoint and hopefully reliable, accurate facts in meaningful context are the result. Most news fits this model. The reporter does not say – “this is what I personally think”, they should always attribute everything to a specific source. Not liking what a source says does not make the news account biased. That would be reader bias.

I dispute the suggestion that MSNBC has a liberal slant. Its evening opinion lineup has a liberal slant, to be sure. But its morning shows and daily news coverage are comparable to those of broadcast news or CNN, whereas Fox’s coverage — news and opinion alike — is biased to the right 24/7.
