Artists in general are not strongly motivated by social status. Conductors are artists and thus no exception. Conducting is, as one of my colleagues described it, an 'integrating activity.' One spends many hours collaborating with others and many hours in solitude with the score. One needs analytical skills and emotional intelligence. 'One must think with the heart and feel with the brain,' as George Szell put it. The work calls for everything you can bring to it. No life experience is, or should be, wasted on a conductor.Conductors, like all musicians, will admit that music can be a strange way to make a living. But it's a great way to make a life.

As a conductor myself I can vouch for this result. Artists in general are not strongly motivated by social status.
