So many factors and repercussions to consider. I'm really interested in how infrastructure has to develop to support new energy technologies, and how that development is determined.

A really thought-provoking article. There is some reduction in CO2 emissions from coal-fired electric cars compared to cars with gasoline engines, but hybrid-electric cars (combination of battery power and gasoline) are significantly cleaner than cars running on coal-fired electricity. So, the coal-fired electric cars are cleaner only when compared to yesterday's gasoline engines. It would damage the atmosphere to use coal-fired electric cars instead of gasoline hybrids. Which means that in much of the U.S. (and world), cleaning up the grid is necessary before electric cars can be clean enough.

JD’s assertion about coal-fired electric cars being cleaner is more than a little off-base.
