If you are black you have heard many, many references to black people as chimps or apes. If you are not, then the reference is either meaningless to you because you have not been the object, or you are pretending you are unaware of the long history of such references, or you make the references yourself, or you just don't give a damn. People may or may not be outraged or may *decide* to not be outraged. After a lifetime of hearing this kind of reference one experiences "outrage fatigue" and decides to not allow this type of hatred into their every day living. I am sure there were those of us who believed that with the advent of the internet and instant media they could point these instances out and with such overwhelming evidence there would eventually be a vindication of sorts that these things are not in their heads, or they merely misunderstood, or perhaps they are "too sensitive". If you don't want to see and understand, you will never see and understand. But those of us you have heard and seen this type of crap our entire lives know better. Just don't look for vindication or satisfaction that you were "right" all along...it's not going to happen. Excuses and excusing will continue for a long time. Why just last month while eating lunch with coworkers and having a side conversation with another coworker of color, our white colleague turned, annoyed, asking what on earth were we doing like too chimpanzees over there (we were conversing and sharing bites of each other's lunch), I (and I assume perhaps the other coworker I was talking to) decided to ignore this remark as our (white) coworkers laughed nervously waiting to see what we would say. Did our coworker do it deliberately or did it slip out? I wonder if she said to herself later "Oh my g-d I can't believe I just said that!". Whether it was meant as racists or not, it was entirely inappropriate to bossily "reprimand" us. But, oh, I could go on for quite some time. At any rate, you hit the name on the head.

Of course it was meant as a racist commentary toward the first black president. Monkeys, apes and chimps have been used as humor since the days of Tarzan - forever and often. To wit: It's so simple even a trained MONKEY could do it. Shame on those who ignore this.

Funny, after the horrific, reprehensible, ugly, media-fueled scorched-earth attack on President Bush and Governor Sarah Palin and her family, I could care less about the nonsensical whining about this silly cartoon – only genuine racists see it as about race. Have you forgot about the New York 's Greenwich Village bakery Lafayette French Pastry offering a "Drunken Negro Cookie" in honor of the inauguration of Barack Obama. This is how racists and bigots get their kicks and use these opportunities for recruitment. And for you who disbelieve this is racist, insensitive, or whatever; wake up and smell the coffee that is what the racists want you to do. Pretend such hatred doesn't exist unless you slapped in the face or worst yet, lynched, murdered, and hanged.

Another excellent example of the hidden racism in America that has expanded.
