Survey: 'Too Much' Election Coverage

The media devotes too much attention to the White House race, Americans say in a just-released survey.

Fifty-one percent of respondents said the media provides "too much coverage of the campaign," according to the Pew Research Center. Only 36 percent said the same thing back in January.

Media critics say the results could be because of attention on the "horse race" aspect of the campaign and issues of personality versus policy.

This is mainly because of the absence of major policy differences between the two Democrats, a professor said.

"No matter what the intentions of the media would be, it would be hard to focus on policy when the contest is between two Democrats who have very little difference between them in terms of policy," Mike Traugott, professor of political science and communication at the University of Michigan, said in one report.

The Pew findings are posted in full here (third item from the top).
