Become A Fellow
As part of its mission to foster civil discourse that improves society, the Miller-McCune Center for Research, Media and Public Policy offers a select number of undergraduate and graduate fellowships and internships at its headquarters in Santa Barbara, Calif. By examining and explaining the theoretical, the Center hopes to provide the general public with concrete options for dealing with major national and global public policy problems - and you can be part of that.
In general, interns and fellows will assist the editorial staff with development of articles and other types of content for the Miller-McCune magazine and Web site. This work will include prepublication research, the review of manuscripts and the writing of articles. In addition, fellows are expected to produce at least one major journalistic piece during his or her term.
We expect you to bring exceptional written and verbal skills to the table, along with experience in using a personal computer and various software packages, including but not restricted to InDesign, Word, Excel and Photoshop. Experience with multimedia applications - including audio and video editing programs - would be helpful but not required. You should have a willingness to accept direction and an ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with multiple assigned objectives without close supervision. We also expect you to to be able to handle and resolve problems, and to maintain effective working relationships with staff, freelance writers, and the general public.
Fellowship candidates should be involved in ongoing graduate level work in a subject area served by the center, while internship candidates should be working toward an associate or bachelors degree in an area served by the center. Perhaps most importantly, you must have an abiding interest in current affairs, and an understanding that academic research is vital to finding solutions for societys most significant problems.
Examples of your duties include researching online and print sources and conducting interviews for stories and listings, as well as gathering and collating other types of materials - graphic, photographic, etc. - to accompany stories. Interns and fellows will copy edit and fact-check materials provided by outside writers and Miller-McCune staffers, and prepare articles to appear both in the magazine and on the Web site. You will also gather, coordinate and present tabular and calendar material to appear in print and online, and post items to the Web site and working to expand the functionality and appeal of the site. Fellows will identify an area of interest in one field served by the center and writing a major story or stories to be published in magazine, online, or a combination of the two before expiration of the fellowship period.
To apply, e-mail a brilliant cover letter, a resume and links to or digital versions of no more than five (5) published news or academic articles to John Mecklin, editor, at: TheEditor@miller-mccune.com. Please, no phone calls. Please. Fellows will be paid between $14 to $16 per hour, while interns will be paid between $10 and $12.
